Choosing a home either to rent or buy could be a challenging task. Whereas you might depend on a real estate agent to show you around properties, the job is half done if you have an idea of what you are looking for. The following are a few tips to guide your choice:

1.    Make a wish list of exact specifications as it fits your personality
In the midst of confusing features you will like to have in your home, ask yourself these questions; do I want a single family home with just my family? Or do I want a multiple family home that can accommodate rentals? What physical outlook best fits my family size and caters for our individual differences? Would I prefer a cozy warm approach or a large home with functional rooms like a office, a study e.t.c. Your answers to questions of this nature will help focus your property search into considering houses that are a better fit for you.

2.    You must determine your preferred neighborhood
Having in mind that Nigeria in itself is a classed society; you should consider the various class distributions before you make a choice of your neighborhood. After all, you don’t want to buy a house in Surulere when you can comfortably get one on the Island and get that class satisfaction.
Asides from class distribution, you must also consider how secured the neighborhood is; its proximity to your workplace; wife’s workplace, children’s school and maybe your place of worship. Depending on your person, you are likely to consider how close it is to access your preferred leisure activities too.

3.    Draw a budget in line wwith your purchasing power
Many at times, it is important to consider the affordability of the house in question; it should be directly proportionate to your purchasing power. However, amidst costing, drawing a budget gives a clearer view of how best an agent can serve you. This determines what choices an agent presents which later trickles down to selecting your ideal home.

4.    Make sure proper inspection is carried out
In this part of the world where maintenance is little to nothing, ensure that all facilities are in proper working condition. You must aware of the extra cost you (or the property owner) needs to incure to make the property liveable. You must make sure you can envision yourself already living in the house.

Finally, a new house is the start of a new beginning and fulfillment if your desired dream home is satisfied. Your life drama or story is written around its four walls so make sure it is comfortable enough for you to live in without regrets.
