Education/Experience
It is never a disadvantage to have a form of education in any career. A property may be better off opting for a manager who has had formal training. Experience is another key factor, perhaps even more important. An experienced manager is less likely to make mistakes and knows the ropes by virtue of his or her experience
People Skills
The importance of this cannot be gainsaid. Property managers with good people skills will almost always excel over those without good people skills. A property manager must be able to handle negotiations effectively. He or she must have a friendly and favourable disposition towards potential clients. He or she must have good listening skills for the benefit of both the client and the property manager. He or she must also have good follow-up skills.
Attention to Detail
Complete knowledge of federal and state laws is non-negotiable for a potential property manager. He or she has to know what is obtainable in the area in which the property is situated and act accordingly. Doing otherwise may cost the property owner a lawsuit or much worse.
Flexibility
Despite the fact that there will be fixed working hours for the property manager, he or she must be able to work flexibly. Situations may arise where he or she will have to work out of schedule. He or she must be able to adapt to such unforeseen events.
